How Do Sharks Sleep?

If you have ever watched a shark swimming through the water, you may have wondered whether it ever stops.

Unlike many animals, sharks are rarely seen resting. Whether they are filmed cruising above coral reefs, moving through the open ocean, or disappearing into the blue, they almost always seem to be in motion. This has led to a surprisingly common question: if sharks are constantly swimming, when do they sleep?

The answer is not as straightforward as it might seem.

What Does Sleep Look Like in a Shark?

One reason this question is difficult to answer is that sharks do not exhibit the obvious signs of sleep we tend to associate with other animals.

They do not have eyelids, so they cannot close their eyes before resting. Even when a shark appears completely still, it can be difficult to know whether it is truly asleep, resting, or simply conserving energy.

As a result, scientists have spent decades trying to understand exactly what sleep looks like in sharks. While there is good evidence that sharks experience periods of rest, determining what is happening in the brain is far more challenging than in terrestrial animals.

In many ways, one of the most interesting things about shark sleep is how much remains unknown.

 

The Sharks That Never Seem to Stop Swimming

Part of the mystery comes from the way some sharks breathe.

Species such as great white sharks and mako sharks rely heavily on a process known as ram ventilation. As they swim forward, water flows continuously over their gills, allowing them to extract oxygen from the surrounding water.

Because of this, these species are often portrayed as animals that must keep moving for their entire lives.

For a long time, this created the impression that such sharks could never truly rest. However, researchers now think the reality may be more complicated.

Swimming in sharks is largely controlled by the spinal cord, meaning that the repetitive motion of swimming may not always require the same level of active control from the brain as we might expect. Some scientists have suggested that this could allow certain areas of the brain to enter a resting state while the animal continues moving through the water.

Exactly how this works is still being investigated. Still, it raises an intriguing possibility: a shark that appears fully active may not necessarily be experiencing the world in the same way as a shark that is actively hunting or responding to its surroundings.

The Sharks That Rest on the Seafloor

Not all sharks face the same challenge.

Many species are capable of buccal pumping, a process that allows them to actively move water over their gills without swimming. This means they can remain stationary while continuing to breathe.

Nurse sharks are among the best-known examples and are often found resting beneath ledges, inside caves, or directly on the seabed. Wobbegongs and angel sharks behave similarly, spending long periods lying motionless while blending into their surroundings.

If you encountered one of these sharks during the day, you might easily assume it was asleep.

Whether these periods represent sleep as we understand it is still being studied, but they clearly play an important role in how these animals rest and conserve energy.

A Question We Are Still Answering

Sharks have inhabited the oceans for more than 400 million years, yet scientists are still uncovering basic details about how some species rest.

Part of the challenge is that studying sleep in marine animals is incredibly difficult. Researchers cannot simply observe behaviour and know what is happening inside the brain, particularly in animals that spend much of their lives underwater and often far from shore.

As a result, many questions remain unanswered. Do all sharks rest in the same way? Are some species capable of sleeping while swimming? How much brain activity changes during these periods of reduced activity?

For now, the evidence suggests that sharks do rest, but the precise nature of that rest remains one of the many mysteries of shark biology.

 

Why This Is Interesting

Sharks are often portrayed as perfectly adapted predators, built for speed, hunting, and survival.

Yet looking at something as simple as how they rest reveals a much more complex picture.

Some species can settle on the seabed for hours at a time, while others may spend much of their lives in motion. Different groups of sharks have evolved distinct solutions to the same challenge, shaped by the environments they inhabit and the ways they breathe.

It is a reminder that even familiar animals can behave in ways that are surprisingly different from our expectations.

A Different Way of Looking at Sharks

The next time you see a shark gliding through the water, it might be worth thinking about it a little differently.

Rather than seeing an animal that never stops moving, consider that it may also be trying to solve one of the most basic challenges faced by every animal on Earth: finding a way to rest.

Exactly how sharks do that is still being explored.

And perhaps that is what makes the subject so fascinating. Even after hundreds of millions of years in the ocean, sharks are still teaching us new things about how life works beneath the surface.
